Meet exceeder. cognira, built in.

exceeder is a web browser with cognira in it. It is Chromium, compiled from source, with Google search, your favorites and tabs down the side, and cognira one keypress away on every page: ask about what you are reading, or have it do the clicking.

It is free, it is for Windows and Mac, and from today anyone can download the early-access build from cognira.dev/exceeder.

§ 01

Why a browser

A lot of what people ask cognira starts on a web page: an article they half follow, a docs page, a long thread. Copying it into a chat box is the slow part, and it loses the page as you go. In exceeder, cognira is one keypress away on the page itself, and reads it when you ask.

It is the same assistant as cognira.dev, signed in with the same account. What you ask in exceeder lands in your cognira.dev history, on your plan’s weekly allowance. The Free plan works.

§ 02

What is in it

  • The cognira bar. Press Ctrl Shift . or click the spark in the toolbar: a glow runs round the page and cognira waits in a pill at the bottom. Ask about the page (a summary, the key takeaways, plain English), or tell it what to do: it clicks, types and scrolls while you watch, and asks before anything that would send, buy or delete.
  • Right-click. Select a phrase and choose Ask cognira about “…” to have it explained, or right-click the page to summarize it.
  • Favorites and tabs down the side. Your bookmarks bar becomes a grid of tiles above your tabs: click one to jump to its tab or open it. Long titles stay readable. Right-click the tab strip if you want tabs back on top.
  • Just the site. The address bar shows where you are, not the tracking after it, until you click it.
  • Updates itself. New versions download, check against the fingerprint cognira publishes and install in the background; relaunch when it suits you.
  • Your account, your profile. Signed in, your exceeder profile shows your cognira name and photo.
  • Setup that brings your things. Bookmarks, history and extensions from Chrome, Edge or Brave, in about a minute. Extensions reinstall from the Chrome Web Store, which works as it does in Chrome.
  • Quiet by default. No sign-in pill, no promo cards on the new tab page, no buttons for Google’s AI Mode: cognira is the assistant here. Your tabs come back when you restart.
  • Report an issue. The menu item (or Alt Shift I) opens a post on the feature board instead of a form that goes to Google.

§ 03

What cognira sees

Nothing, until you ask. When you ask about a page, its text goes along as reference for that one answer; when you give cognira a task, so do the buttons and fields it can use. Only the model sees them: they are not saved with your chat, they are never used to teach cognira anything, and what is typed in password fields never leaves the page.

A page is also untrusted text, so while one is attached cognira switches off everything a page could try to talk it into: connectors, tools and fetching other addresses. exceeder does not send your browsing history to cognira.

§ 04

What isn’t there yet

It is early access, and some things are missing. Better you hear it here:

  • Windows and Mac (Apple silicon) for now. Linux isn’t ready.
  • The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you. Choose More info, then Run anyway. The download page shows the installer’s SHA-256 if you want to check it.
  • The Mac build is not notarized by Apple yet, so the first time macOS won’t open it: go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway.
  • Chrome Sync does not work: Google only offers it in Google Chrome. Your things come over once, during setup.

§ 05

Try it

Download it from cognira.dev/exceeder, then press Ctrl Shift . on the longest article you have open. If something breaks, Report an issue is in the menu; it comes straight to us.

How it was built, including the afternoon the linker ran out of memory, is in One desktop PC. A whole browser.
